Standing with Retailers as Next Attorney General

By Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro

Throughout my time as Majority Leader of the Nevada Senate, I have been proud to work closely with the Retail Association of Nevada to advance legislation that protects and supports the thousands of retailers who are the backbone of our state’s economy.

While the wins have been significant, there is more work to be done to keep pace with the evolving needs of Nevada’s retailers.

As Attorney General, I intend to continue the strong partnership built with the Retail Association of Nevada and its members to ensure that Nevada remains a great place to do business.

What We’ve Accomplished

In just the last year, we’ve worked together to pass priorities protecting the well-being of Nevadans and local businesses. These include the creation of a state-backed safety net where extraordinary circumstances exist or there are future disruptions to federal benefit programs such as SNAP or WIC, legislation that empowers the State Board of Health to modify the list of vaccines able to be administered by pharmacists to ensure Nevadans have access to vaccines that have been proven to be safe, reliable, and effective, and the establishment of a new category C felony when someone intentionally damages a retail establishment while committing a theft involving $750 or more in loss or destruction.

Looking to the Future

Nevada’s next Attorney General must treat organized retail theft with the seriousness it deserves. As a career prosecutor, I have the knowledge and experience necessary to tackle these coordinated, sophisticated criminals and ensure that significant damage to storefronts, inventory, and risks to the safety of employees do not become the norm.

As AG, I will improve communication between retailers and local law enforcement to more easily share case information across jurisdictions and connect related incidents into a pattern that makes these cases easier to prosecute.

I will also make sure the tools the Legislature has given us are used properly and effectively.

Finally, I will also serve as a check on the federal government — regardless of who is President — to ensure that the well-being of Nevadans and Nevada businesses is protected.

I am grateful to the Retail Association of Nevada and its members for the partnership we have built over the years. I look forward to keeping that door open as Attorney General and continuing to strengthen our relationship.

Thank you for all you do for Nevada’s businesses and the Nevadans they employ.
