By Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar
When I became Secretary of State in 2023, I had a daunting task in front of me: Overhauling Nevada’s elections systems to the standard demanded by modern technology, ensuring our system’s security against foreign adversaries, and delivering it in time for the 2024 presidential primary.
But I didn’t feel that pressure when it came to administering our business filing system. Why? Because I, like so many business owners in Nevada, have had to deal with the frustrations and pains of our previous filing system. I knew what was broken long before I came into office, and I was incredibly excited to go to work for entrepreneurs daring to pursue the American Dream in our state.
Three years later, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. Our call center hold times have been slashed from over an hour to under five minutes. Our revenue from filings has increased by millions every year, meaning businesses are choosing to incorporate here instead of our competitor states. And Silver Flume, our notoriously unreliable business filing portal, is dead. I think I speak for all of us when I say not a single tear was shed the day we put it in the trash and brought the Orion system online.
We say so often that our goals are modernization, innovation, and transparency. What that means in practice is simple: You can’t trust government if it doesn’t work.
Nevada’s retailers are a critical part of our economy. Large or small, you make our state great. And the values we pledge in my office don’t just come from nowhere; they are the same values that the industrious people of this state have always embodied as they push Nevada to be the best version of herself every single day.
That’s why we aren’t satisfied with the work we’ve done. Our work this term has just brought us on par with every other state. Now is the time to distinguish ourselves from every state as the best place in the country to do business, because every 5% market share we take from a state like Delaware generates $100 million in revenue to Nevada to fund the things we care about.
If re-elected, my first goal is to substantially reduce credit card processing fees for your transactions with the Secretary of State, by creating a bank within the office solely for this purpose.
We also need to expand services. Our goal is to launch business concierge service, increase accessibility for business owners who speak a language other than English, and create a one-stop-shop for local business requirements, so you don’t have to keep track of multiple jurisdictions on different sites to stay in compliance.
You should be able to spend your time on growing your business, not dealing with government. And as a former business owner, I strive to deliver that every single day.
Thank you for all that you do to make Nevada great!
